Decade van Pythagoras

Wat is de decade van Pythagoras? Is dat hetzelfde als de stelling van Pythagoras of wat anders? Wat is het verband daartussen en de driehoek van Pascal en het binomium van Newton?

Antwoord

De Decade van Pythagoras staat voor het getal 10. Voor ons niets bijzonders.... misschien, maar voor de Pythagoreeërs was het wel heel bijzonder, zoals je uit volgende citaten kan lezen:

‘Het getal zeven’, zegt de Kabbala, ‘is het grote getal van de goddelijke Mysteriën’; het getal tien is dat van alle menselijke kennis (de decade van Pythagoras); 1000 is het getal tien tot de derde macht en daarom is het getal 7000 ook symbolisch.

The first three numbers, corresponding to Synthesis, Combination, and Progression, play, as Comte has shown (Synthèse Subjective, ch. i. 108 et seq.), a far more potent part in the mental processes than is commonly supposed. In the Pythagorean school, the point, the line, the surface, and the solid corresponded respectively to the first four numbers: the addition of these produced the tetractys (quaternion or decade) which was of great importance to their system.

Ten, or the Decade, brings all these digits back to unity, ending the Pythagorean table. In both the Microcosm and the Macrocosm the three higher numbers of the Decade stand for the invisible and metaphysical world, while the lower seven refer to the realm of physical phenomena.
