Er geldt dat $au^2+bu+c$ gelijk is aan $a(u-\tan x)(u-\tan y)$. Hieruit kun je $\tan x+\tan y$ en $\tan x\cdot\tan y$ bepalen en dus ook $\tan(x+y)$, via de optelformule. Stel dat je weet dat $\tan (x+y)=K$. Dan geldt $\tan^2(x+y)=K^2$, en dus $\sin^2(x+y)=K^2\cos^2(x+y)$. Ook geldt $\sin^2(x+y)+\cos^2(x+y)=1$, dus kun je $\sin^2(x+y)$ en $\cos^2(x+y)$ bepalen, en ook $\sin(x+y)$ op het teken na.
