Vanwaar komt het getal nul?

Veel onduidelijkheid. Soms lees ik: komt van de Moren, soms Babyloniers, soms Arabieren. In de Atharva Veda (de wetenschap accepteert de Vedas al vanaf 5000 tot 10.000 voor Chr. in geschreven vorm) 5:15 mantra 1-11 wordt dit getal expliciet genoemd. Wat is nu juist? Vanwaar komt het getal nul?

Die onduidelijkheid is terecht. Er is waarschijnlijk niet één bron aan te wijzen:

"I think there's no question that one can't claim it had a single origin," Kaplan says. "Wherever you're going to get placeholder notation, it's inevitable that you're going to need some way to denote absence of a number."
